Book-to-Screen Adaptations: What Movie and Series to Watch ?
From The Handmaid’s Tale to Gossip Girl, many books have been adapted to the screens. On the occasion of the new movie Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025) being released in cinemas, here is small selection of books published by Saga Egmont that have been successfully adapted
New and Improved Bridget Jones Audiobooks
More than two decades after its initial release, the Bridget Jones Diaries series continues to appeal to its audience with a relatable and fun portrayal of modern womanhood. Bridget Jones’ character has reached the rank of cultural icon, namely through its adaptation in three – now, four – movies.
The storyline of the new movie follows the plotline of the third book, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, for which new and improved covers in the Dutch and Danish markets are released. Saga Egmont had already released the full series as audiobooks in Dutch, as well as in Danish. The series is also fully available as Danish eBooks and print formats. Moreover, the first two volumes of the Bridget Jones series are to be released as audiobooks in German by the end of March this year: Bridget Jones – Schokolade zum Frühstück (Bridget Jones’ Diary) and Bridget Jones – Am Rande des Wahnsinns (Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason).
The Enduring Appeal of Book Adaptations
First released in 1995 as a book and 2001 as a movie, the Bridget Jones’ Diaries universe today include 4 best-selling novels and 4 movies. The recently released fourth movie, featuring the original cast and being co-written by author Helen Fielding, already promises great box office numbers, which is a testament to the success of well-written characters, and more specifically, to the wide appeal of movie (and series) adaptations of books.
Helen Fielding herself has acknowledged the influence of classic literature on her work, famously stating that she “shamelessly stole the plot from Pride and Prejudice” for the first book of her series. Pride and Prejudice is one of those classics works of literature, enjoyable in all formats: movie (the 1995 BBC adaptation being referenced throughout the Bridget Jones series), paperback, eBook, and audiobook.
